Milanos veteran Joc Crawford: "Great to be back"

After more than a year away from the ELF, 36-year-old running back Joc Crawford made a triumphant return to Europe's top league this past weekend. The veteran made several big plays putting up 130 all-purpose yards and a touchdown for the Milano Seamen. Not bad for a tailback on the wrong side of 30, not to mention 35.

Crawford was instrumental in helping the Seamen pick up their second win of the season as his consistent running helped the offense stay on schedule, and his big play ability led to a clutch 56-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

"It felt great to be back. Obviously I've been anxious to get back in the ELF, after missing the entire 2023 season. I was contacted mid-season by a team last year and therefore I never gave up hope of the possibility of returning. I'm very fortunate that there was a team in the ELF that is willing to use one of their (A) spots for an American RB."

Life as a American Import Running Back

Crawford, who ran for over a thousand yards in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons for the Berlin Thunder, was already in Italy when he got the call from Milano. The versatile pro just finished playing a season as a defensive back with the Lazio Marines in the Italian Football League. The ELF's second-leading rusher all-time had his eyes on returning to the ELF, but knew it wasn't under his control as many teams shied away from signing import American running backs, instead opting for wide receivers.

"I say this with all humility and humbleness. I think I have proven in my first two seasons that I have the ability to produce consistent numbers throughout the season and contribute in the ELF. It was just unfortunate for my situation being an American RB, and the limitation on (A) spots, that all teams preferred to use what they’ve called the 'trend' of an American quarterback and wide receiver. So I'm very blessed and fortunate that the Milano Seamen believe in my abilities and gave me the opportunity to come in and contribute."

The savvy veteran is no stranger to joining new teams in new cities as he's played in Brazil, Germany, Romania, Finland, Spain, and now Italy. Even so, Crawford is thankful for a new team, a new city, and another chance to show what he can do in the ELF.

"It’s been awesome getting to know my new coaches, teammates and the staff of the Seamen organization. Everyone has been very welcoming and supportive since I've joined. I haven't explored the city yet because my focus has been football and getting on the same page with the heads of the organization, coaches, and my teammates. My teammates are from different parts of Italy, so it's been nice to learn about Italian culture in general. I do look forward to exploring Milan at some point."

Milano looks forward to a crucial month ahead

The Seamen look to get on a winning streak following the victory in Barcelona. Next up Milano will face the Enthroners, Mercenaries, and Enthroners again as they hope to string together some wins before the end of July. Yet, for the always professional Crawford, he knows what his role is in Milano moving forward:

"Simple, do my assignment as part of the eleven on the field for the offense. We have talented guys here, so contribute with them towards our goals offensively, which is to move the ball and score points. Be the best teammate and leader I can for our team and represent the Milano Seamen professionally on and off the field. I've been presented with a great opportunity here and I just want to add value towards this team's future success."
